Frederick aiming high after best-ever F3 result (fiaformula3.com)
“He has gone from strength-to-strength so far during the 2022 campaign and Kaylen Frederick was delighted to see his perseverance rewarded with fifth in a tricky Sprint Race – the best finish of his Formula 3 career to date.”
Free Practice: 3rd
Qualifying | July 1st: 7th
Race 1 | Sprint Race: July 2nd/Saturday:
Starting Position: 6th
Finish Position: 5th
With a great start at the green flag Kaylen Frederick was in a good position to hunt for advantages. Racing around the outside in Turns 4 & 5 Kaylen captured 5th. Pace was strong and Kaylen hunted within striking range into lap 3. In laps following, Frederick struggled with increasing understeer and loss of front grip resulting in falling out of DRS range of the cars ahead. Staying half a second ahead of the two pursuing Trident cars who had DRS, 5th position was held until the race end.
Kaylen Frederick | Interview FIA Formula 3:
“The weekend has gone fairly well for us so far. Happy with the Qualifying pace. We’re lacking a little bit in a couple of areas which is fine. I think we made up for it a little bit in the race. I had a good start, made up a position off the line, just didn’t have the pace in some areas – so we obviously need to work on that.”
“It was a little bit tricky with the change in wind direction but we were fairly comfortable in the high-speed areas. We were struggling more in the lower speed corners. Overall, I think we had a pretty good package, but I need to search for a couple more tweaks for the car.”
With a package that is well-adapted to many of Silverstone’s toughest areas and one that has shown form in the preceding races, Frederick’s optimistic about his chances of moving up the order throughout the 22-lap race – all the way to a maiden F3 podium.
“Hopefully I’ll get that podium! We’ll see what we can get out of the car and we’ll obviously make some changes for the Feature Race. This will be a longer race as well, so if we have the pace there is a bit more time to make it work for us.”
Feature Race | Sunday, July 3rd: 12th Place
Starting Position: 7th
Finish Position: 12th
The opening of the race allowed Kaylen again to pounce and move into 6th on Lap 1. Misfortune however dictated outcomes as Kaylen went over curbs and heavily damaged the diffuser and under-tray on one side. Pace was significantly diminished. Kaylen fought steadily against his teammate Hadjar to hold position but struggled against loss of grip into turns and repeatedly went wide. The chasing Hadjar and the 3 Red Bull cars came by in consecutive laps. A safety car interrupted the race mid-way, however this was followed with another three pursuers able to pass and Kaylen finishing in 12th.
